::Scammers. We were picked up 20 mins late from Split Station for transfer to their base a couple of miles away. They then tried charging me to print out the receipt which I had been told by Holiday Autos that I could show on my phone. They reluctantly agreed if I e-mailed it to them. They then tried to sell me their damage waiver insurance, saying that the one i had already bought for much less was no good. I refused. I handed my card over for the 850 Euro pre-auth and was told it was declined, probably because I didn’t have enough credit but that the solution would be for me to buy their 99 Euro insurance as then they wouldn’t need the pre-auth. I was sure I had plenty of credit and checked my account online to confirm that was the case. My other cards were in Apple Pay but they don’t accept payment in that way. I asked to pay with my debit card but he said no. My friend offered to try using his card but they said that he would then need to sign up to the contract to do this, which would come at huge cost. I asked him to try my card again, showing that I had plenty of credit. He quickly swiped it and said it had been declined again, giving me a receipt which confirmed this. I was determined not to be forced to buy their insurance so I called my bank back in the UK. They told me that the transaction should have gone through but it was showing on their system as not being a proper transaction. They said that I should have been asked to enter my PIN, which I hadn’t been. I challenged the Fleet guy and asked him to put in the chip reader properly. I entered my PIN and, surprise surprise, it then went through fine. I later looked this issue online and found that it is a common scam in the car hire industry to force you to buy their insurance, so please watch out for it. On a positive note I was dreading dropping off the car at Split Airport having read the problems other have had with spurious damage. This went fine without any problems (we had taken dozens of photos at the collection to cover ourselves but thankfully they weren’t required).

::DO NOT USE THIS RENT A CAR COMPANY!! We rented a car for two days while staying at the Radisson Blue hotel in Croatia. We went in to agree a price the day before and when we picked the car up the price had gone up. Unfortunately on the second day a women drove into the back of us quite whilst we sat waiting at some traffic lights. The police came, gave us all the correct documentation and told us what to do. We rang fleet outside the hotel to tell them what had happened and for some reason they sent us to the fleet at split airport. We got there and they said we didn't need to go to them, should have gone straight back to the fleet outside the hotel. We didn't appreciate being messed around after we had just been in an accident. So we brought the car back to the hotel, dropped the keys off and the guy didn't believe our story of what had happened even though we had a police report saying what had. We still got charged in full and they even had the cheek to charge us for petrol when the police had advised not to fill it up due to where the impact of the crash was.

::Tried to charge for things we didn't do on the car. Even checked down the car!!! the first time I see this! They didn't check down when we took the car at the first place and then tried to charge us saying we had drove over rocks.... ??? What???? Thanks god we made a video before leaving it showed scratches they never wrote down and their paper at the first place and therefore helped us prove we didn't damaged the bottom of the car. People are extremely nice at your arrival but definitely not the same when you come back.

::I actually had a fine experience with Fleet - the location is pretty convenient to get out of major traffic when leaving Split, and the staff were agreeable. I was even upgraded from an Opel Corsa to a Volkswagen Polo, which was in fine order. I took pictures of every scrape and ding on the car before driving away, and the staff member inspecting the car with me did the same. I had no issues returning the car (which I washed and vacuumed before dropping it off), and my deposit was released without issue. The only problem (hence four stars), however, is that the deposit itself was 12,000 kn (ca. €1,600), which is the highest I've ever seen. Otherwise, if you take time to check for all the damage before you rent the car, drive safely (!) and make sure the car is clean before you come back, you should have no issue with renting from Fleet or any other rental agency.

::Quite good. Had to wait a bit to get and give back the car. The car was almost new. Staff was friendly and accepted that i wasn't into buying insurances or extras. I just had to pay a small fee for "using ferries". All in all no complaints.
